Garbage. YUCK!!! Most of us just try to get rid of it! Toss it in the incinerator, place huge bags of it out front for collection or, for some, throw it on the sidewalk. But today, we are learning more and more about how important it is to reuse and "upcycle" items we would normally throw away! Upcycling is the process of taking an item that would normally be thrown away, and reusing or transforming it into something of better quality or a higher value. And, just to be clear, I don’t mean reusing or upcycling old molded food, puhleasssse throw that away!! :-)
As you can probably imagine, Tristin and Tyler were a wee bit reluctant to touch garbage, let alone make a garbage craft (as your kids may be as well), but as soon as they saw all of the amazing items that Tiffany Threadgould of RePlayGround crafted from “stinky garbage”, they quickly jumped right into making a wallet out of a cereal box like it was the best thing EVA!! Click here to check out Tristin and Tyler’s new episode where they work on their wallets and learn about upcycling!
Now, I won't hide the fact that I am getting a little uncomfortable with the huge amount of plastic bottles, wrappers and cans crowding up my kitchen that Tristin and Tyler are saving for "amazing garbage projects" as they call them, but I haven't freaked out (yet) because I know that they are just using what they've learned to express themselves, and isn't that important? Especially since their goal is to help the environment.
What kinds of projects can you make out of reusable materials? Take an hour and make an upcycled craft with your kids! Why not? You can check out www.replayground.com for some amazing upcycling ideas!
Go for it!! And please send me pictures of any cool projects, I will definitely post them!
"Garbage is not stinky, if you give it a little time" Tristin says so, Happy Upcycling!! Tiffany
